Real Madrid Loses Rodrygo for Season

Real Madrid suffered a massive blow as Rodrygo tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season, meaning he'll miss the upcoming World Cup. This is a devastating injury for both club and country at a crucial time.

The injury was a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee, sustained during a La Liga match against Getafe. In a show of toughness, Rodrygo remarkably continued to play for around 30 minutes after his knee buckled following a challenge near the touchline. This blow came shortly after the 25-year-old had returned to the pitch following nearly a month on the sidelines with tendinitis. He was substituted into the Getafe match in the 54th minute in an attempt to spark an attack for Real Madrid before the devastating injury occurred. The timing is brutal for Real Madrid, who now face a severe shortage of attacking options. For their upcoming fixtures, including a Champions League clash with Manchester City, they are without the injured Kylian Mbappé and the suspended Franco Mastantuono, leaving Vinícius Jr. and Gonzalo as the primary available forwards. Recovery from a combined ACL and meniscus tear typically requires seven to ten months, with some cases extending closer to a year. This lengthy rehabilitation process definitively ends his 2025-26 season and rules out any possibility of participating in the summer World Cup. For the Brazilian national team, the loss is a significant disruption just over three months before their World Cup opener against Morocco on June 13. Coach Carlo Ancelotti had considered Rodrygo a key part of his attacking plans for the tournament in North America. Ancelotti will now turn to other talents to fill the void. Attackers like Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha will be expected to shoulder more responsibility, while the injury could also open the door for other players to make the final squad. The injury cut short a recent return to form for the winger. After enduring a goal drought that lasted 32 consecutive appearances, Rodrygo had bounced back, contributing three goals and three assists in his last six starts for Madrid. Following the diagnosis, fellow Brazilian star Neymar, who suffered a similar injury in 2023, posted a message of support. He encouraged Rodrygo to take care of his mental health during the long recovery ahead, calling him his "heir."
