Ducks Land Star D-Man Carlson

Anaheim acquired defenseman John Carlson from Washington for two draft picks, including a conditional first-rounder. Carlson's arrival gives the Ducks a proven blueliner with offensive upside as they look to accelerate their rebuild.

John Carlson is in the final season of an eight-year, $64 million contract he signed with the Capitals in 2018. The deal carries an $8 million annual cap hit, and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season. The trade signals a clear shift for Washington, a franchise that has been a consistent playoff contender for over a decade. Currently sitting fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 31-25-7 record, the Capitals are on the outside of the playoff picture, prompting the move to acquire future assets. This is a significant change for a team that won the Stanley Cup in 2018. For Anaheim, the move adds a veteran power-play quarterback to a young defensive corps. The Ducks are currently second in the Pacific Division with a 34-24-3 record and are looking to solidify their postseason chances. Carlson's offensive prowess will be a welcome addition to a team that has been rebuilding and is now poised to compete. A two-time All-Star, Carlson was a key member of the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup championship team, leading all defensemen in playoff scoring that year. He leaves Washington as the franchise's all-time leader in points by a defenseman. Over his 17-year career with the Capitals, he has amassed 166 goals and 606 assists. The draft picks heading to Washington are a conditional first-rounder in either 2026 or 2027 and a third-round pick in 2027. If the Ducks miss the playoffs in 2026, they have the option to send their 2027 first-round pick to the Capitals instead of their 2026 selection.
