Experiment Tests if Baby Boomers Can Succeed on Instagram

A new social media experiment has been launched to test whether a Baby Boomer can build a successful presence on Instagram. The project aims to show that authenticity and relatability are more critical factors for social media success than age or demographic.

- The experiment is being conducted by Andy Jacob, CEO of The Jacob Group, who is in his late 50s and is being coached by his 21-year-old social media intern, Karlyn Ankrom. - While Gen Z and Millennials dominate Instagram, Baby Boomers are a growing demographic on the platform, with 39% of this generation using it. Baby Boomers are also 19% more likely to share content on social media compared to any other generation. - For local businesses, a key Instagram Reels strategy is to leverage trending audio and challenges to increase visibility. Content doesn't have to be highly polished; authentic, behind-the-scenes looks at daily operations or product creation can be very effective. - User-generated content (UGC) campaigns are a powerful, low-cost strategy for small businesses to build trust and increase engagement. This can be encouraged by creating branded hashtags, running contests, or simply featuring customer posts. - AI-powered tools like Canva AI and CapCut are streamlining content creation for small teams. Canva's "Magic Write" can generate captions and post ideas, while CapCut simplifies video editing with templates and auto-captioning, making it easier to produce content for Reels and TikTok. - When starting a social media agency, defining a niche, such as serving specific local business sectors, can be a strong unique selling proposition. Developing standardized systems for client onboarding, content creation, and reporting is crucial for scaling. - Pricing for social media management services for small businesses typically ranges from $500 to $2,500 per month for basic packages covering one or two platforms. More comprehensive, full-service packages can range from $2,000 to $5,000 monthly. - To acquire initial clients, new agencies can leverage local networking, offer a specialized service package, and build a portfolio of results-focused case studies to demonstrate value. Strategic partnerships with other local businesses or marketing agencies can also be a valuable source of referrals.
