UAE Visa Overstay Penalties
The UAE unified visa-overstay penalties at AED 50 per day across all emirates, streamlining rules for travelers. The government also launched a 30-minute digital return papers service amid a surge in overseas cases. Pakistan consulate offered special Nadra ID services in Ras Al Khaimah on February 15 for local residents.
- Before the recent unification, overstay fines varied by visa type and emirate, creating a complex and often confusing system for residents and tourists. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) implemented the standardized AED 50 daily fine to simplify compliance. - While most tourist and visit visas now have no grace period, with fines starting the day after expiry, residents with a cancelled visa are typically granted a 30-day grace period to either leave the country or change their status before penalties begin. Certain categories, such as Golden and Green visa holders, may have grace periods of up to 180 days. - Failure to pay accumulated overstay fines can lead to serious consequences beyond the financial penalty, including being barred from exiting the UAE until the amount is settled, rejection of future visa applications, and potential deportation in severe cases. - The 30-minute digital return paper service is offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs primarily for UAE citizens and Golden Visa holders who are stranded overseas due to a lost or damaged passport. This service provides a free, single-entry emergency document to facilitate their return to the UAE. - The special NADRA service in Ras Al Khaimah was part of a mobile registration drive by Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority to make essential services more accessible to citizens living far from the main consulates in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. - Services provided by the NADRA mobile team included applications for new identity documents, renewals, and modifications to the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), which allows for visa-free travel to Pakistan. - Overstay fines can be checked and paid online via the ICP portal for most emirates or the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) platform for Dubai. Payments are also accepted at Amer service centres and immigration counters at airports. - In addition to the daily fine, overstayers may be required to pay for an exit permit, also known as an out-pass, before they are allowed to depart the country, which can add an extra AED 250-350 to their total cost.
