Pakistan Super League Nears Record Broadcast Deal

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is reportedly on the verge of a record-breaking PKR 18 billion broadcast rights deal. The agreement would be the largest in the country's sports history, reflecting the cricket league's growing profile. Despite the record valuation, the PSL's broadcast rights still trail those of India's Women's Premier League.

- The reported PKR 18 billion (approximately INR 586 crore) deal for the 2026-2029 cycle represents a 43% increase over the previous 2024-2025 rights, which were valued at PKR 6.3 billion total. - A tech company that recently acquired a PSL franchise, Walee Technologies, is reportedly the frontrunner for the new domestic rights. This follows a trend, as ARY, owner of the Karachi Kings, previously held broadcast rights. - The new four-year contract's value is boosted by the league's expansion from six to eight teams, which will increase the number of matches from 34 to 44. - To encourage more competitive bidding, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) disallowed consortium bids for this rights cycle. - Two major domestic sports channels were disqualified from the bidding process after failing to settle outstanding dues totaling nearly PKR 4 billion. - Despite the record domestic deal, the PSL's broadcast value is significantly less than India's Women's Premier League (WPL), whose global media rights for 2023–2027 were secured by Viacom18 for approximately USD 116 million (INR 951 crore). - The financial disparity with the Indian Premier League (IPL) is even more stark; a single IPL match is valued at approximately USD 13.4 million in media rights, whereas the entire PSL season is valued at around USD 16 million. - For any broadcast deal exceeding PKR 3 billion, the PCB allocates a portion of the surplus (USD 500,000) to signing prominent foreign players.
