Neuralink moves to mass production

Neuralink says an ALS patient has regained speech via a brain implant and the company is shifting toward industrial-scale manufacturing and robot-assisted surgeries to scale access by the end of 2026. The milestone includes decoded-speech demos and hints at broader commercial ambitions beyond clinical trials. ( )

The VOICE trial is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT07224256 and lists the N1 Implant and the R1 Robot as the investigational device and robotic electrode inserter used in the study. (clinicaltrials.gov) Neuralink’s own trial page states the first human received a Neuralink implant in January 2024 and that multiple participants with ALS and spinal-cord injury have been enrolled since. (neuralink.com) The company reported an enrollment bump to 21 total participants worldwide in a January 28, 2026 update that was picked up by Reuters and echoed in the firm’s “Two Years of Telepathy” post. (usnews.com) Neuralink closed a $650 million Series E on June 2, 2025, a financing round the company said would fund expanded device development and wider patient access. (neuralink.com) In December 2025 Neuralink appointed David McMullen, a former FDA official who led neurological device oversight, to head medical affairs as the company scales clinical operations. (bloomberg.com) Published reporting and company footage describe the speech-decoding protocol as staged—collecting vocalized sample sentences, then mouthed versions, then silent intent—and mapping neural signals to individual phonemes before assembling words and synthesizing voice. (pcmag.com) Elon Musk and Neuralink materials have also signalled a product roadmap that includes a next-generation implant the company says will offer roughly three times the capability of the current device and a separate “Blindsight” program aimed at low-resolution vision restoration.
