TfL & Manchester upgrades cause disruption

Transport for London announced 2026 upgrades including new trains and station improvements, while Manchester’s Piccadilly and Metrolink works are causing major travel disruption — both underscore the operational and communication demands of big capital works ( ).

TfL says the new Piccadilly line trains will begin operating in the second half of 2026 and on‑rail testing is due to start in summer 2026 while enabling track works continue. (tfl.gov.uk) Siemens Mobility confirmed up to 80% of the new Piccadilly fleet will be assembled at its Goole rail village as part of a c.£200m investment that the company says will create hundreds of UK manufacturing jobs. (news.siemens.co.uk) TfL and government-backed procurement has also added ten extra Elizabeth line trains, with Alstom starting construction on those additional units in October 2025 to support the line that carries roughly 800,000 journeys a day. (alstom.com (tfl-newsroom.prgloo.com) TfL’s “Equity in Motion” toilet programme identifies 145 TfL‑managed sites with toilets plus around 40 additional station toilets on non‑TfL managed sites, backed by a £3m‑per‑year investment for five years to expand accessible facilities. (tfl.gov.uk) Network Rail’s Piccadilly Corridor Renewal is a £7.9m programme that replaced 11 sets of points, renewed 9,000 metres of cabling, swapped timber sleepers for concrete and upgraded lineside equipment across six lines during a nine‑day shutdown from 14–22 February 2026. (networkrail.co.uk) During the Piccadilly works platforms 1–12 were closed while the station concourse and retail remained open and operators diverted services with Stockport used as an alternative terminus and TfGM advising customers to use Bee Network buses and Metrolink, while Metrolink itself has a near‑£150m upgrade programme through to 2027 and a planned reduced tram frequency (15‑minute headways) from 30 March 2026 for resilience works.
