Athleisure Trends Go Retro

80s athleisure is trending with leg warmers, leotards, Lycra, and spandex making comebacks from dance influences. Brands like Oner Active are promoting endurance pieces like AirMove™ Jacket and EasyLift™ Bralette with up to 50% off, while CUPRA launched a high-performance activewear collection fusing design, movement, and attitude. The trend blends functionality with gym-to-street versatility.

The 80s fitness fashion boom was heavily driven by actress Jane Fonda, whose 1982 workout video sold over 17 million copies. Her uniform of vibrant leotards and tights turned exercise gear into a mainstream fashion statement. Icons of the era like leg warmers weren't a fashion invention, but functional dancewear adopted by the masses. Their crossover was cemented by popular films of the time, including "Fame" (1980) and "Flashdance" (1983), which brought the dance-rehearsal look to the streets. The body-hugging silhouettes of the decade were made possible by spandex, a synthetic fiber commercially known as Lycra. Invented by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers in 1958, it could stretch up to five times its original length and was developed as a lightweight alternative to rubber. While the 80s defined its look, the term "athleisure" was actually coined in March 1979 in an issue of *Nation's Business* magazine. The concept of athletic-inspired daily wear, however, traces back even further, with some citing Suzanne Lenglen's knee-length tennis skirt at Wimbledon in 1921 as an early milestone. Today, the retro revival is part of a massive global athleisure market, which is projected to surpass $250 billion by 2026. The trend caters to both younger consumers seeking legacy brands and older demographics drawn to nostalgia. Modern iterations of retro athleisure are also evolving with new technology and a focus on sustainability. Brands are increasingly using recycled and eco-friendly materials to produce vintage-inspired pieces, meeting consumer demand for more ethical fashion choices.
