Tesla Cybertruck Price Jumps 17%

Tesla has raised the base price of its all-wheel-drive Cybertruck by 17% to $69,990 just days after launch. Meanwhile, the cheapest rear-wheel-drive model is now $10,000 pricier and has been delayed until 2027, reflecting strong demand and ongoing cost pressures.

The Cybertruck's initial 2019 reveal promised a starting price of just $39,900, with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version slated for $49,900. This aggressive pricing strategy helped generate over a million refundable $100 pre-orders, building a massive demand pipeline years before the first delivery. By the official launch event in November 2023, the base rear-wheel-drive model's price had jumped over 50% to $60,990. The all-wheel-drive version was priced at $79,990, and the high-performance "Cyberbeast" model was set at $99,990, significantly resetting expectations from the initial announcement. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the manufacturing difficulties, stating, "We dug our own grave with Cybertruck," and warned it could take 18 months to become a significant positive cash flow contributor. The vehicle's unconventional stainless steel exoskeleton and design created enormous challenges in reaching volume production. Analysts from Wedbush projected Tesla could produce 10,000 units in a quarter during the first half of 2024, while others forecast total 2024 production around 35,000 units. This is a fraction of the Gigafactory Texas's installed annual capacity of 125,000 Cybertrucks, with 2025 sales reportedly just over 20,000. The price adjustments position the Cybertruck in a competitive electric truck market against rivals like the Rivian R1T, which starts at $69,900, and the Ford F-150 Lightning, with its XLT model starting around $63,000. The GMC Hummer EV pickup occupies a higher price bracket, starting near $99,000. Some analysts believe the high initial pricing was a strategic move to capitalize on limited production capacity and capture higher margins from early adopters. The recent short-lived price drop to under $60k before the latest hike is seen by some as a marketing tactic to create artificial urgency and reinforce the Cybertruck's image as a premium product.
