OpenAI Secures Massive $110B Funding

OpenAI has closed a historic $110 billion funding round, one of the largest private raises ever. Tech giants Amazon and Nvidia backed the deal, which will be used to scale its AI models and expand its consumer and enterprise offerings. The investment cements OpenAI's dominance and highlights the massive capital required to compete at the frontier of AI.

This latest capital injection catapults OpenAI's valuation to a staggering $840 billion, a significant leap from its $500 billion valuation in October 2025. The new funding more than doubles the company's previous record-setting $40 billion funding round in 2025. The investment breakdown reveals a $50 billion commitment from Amazon, with Nvidia and SoftBank each contributing $30 billion. More investors are expected to join the round as it progresses. This deal marks the largest private funding round in history. As part of the deal, Amazon's cloud computing division, AWS, will become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI's "Frontier" enterprise platform. OpenAI has also committed to utilizing 2 gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon's proprietary Trainium AI chips. The partnership with Nvidia is also expanding, with OpenAI set to use 5 gigawatts of computing capacity built on Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin architecture. This massive scaling of infrastructure is aimed at meeting the surging demand for AI, with ChatGPT now serving over 900 million weekly active users and 50 million consumer subscribers. This funding round is structured to secure the immense computing power necessary for developing next-generation AI models. OpenAI has stated it is targeting approximately $600 billion in total compute spending through 2030 to maintain its competitive edge against rivals like Google's Gemini and Anthropic. The agreement with Amazon includes an initial investment of $15 billion, with an additional $35 billion to be provided once certain conditions are met. While OpenAI's relationship with its early backer Microsoft remains unchanged, this new alliance with Amazon signifies a major expansion of its infrastructure partners.
