Massachusetts Hiker Rescued From Icy Trail

A Massachusetts hiker was rescued by sled near Lonesome Lake in New Hampshire's White Mountains after an icy fall on Sunday morning. Officials emphasized the treacherous winter conditions and importance of proper gear for winter hiking. The hiker was safely evacuated and is recovering.

- The rescued hiker has been identified as 72-year-old Steven Gabis of Clinton, Massachusetts. He was with a group that had hiked to the Lonesome Lake Hut on Saturday and stayed overnight. The fall occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning when Gabis slipped on ice while walking near the hut. - The rescue operation involved a New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officer and eight volunteers from the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team. The team was notified shortly before 9:00 a.m., reached the hut by 11:00 a.m., and transported Gabis in a rescue sled to the Lafayette Campground trailhead, arriving at 12:20 p.m. - The Lonesome Lake Trail, where the rescue took place, is a 1.6-mile trail with a 1,000-foot elevation gain. While considered a moderate hike, winter conditions introduce significant hazards like deep snow and ice, making traction devices such as microspikes a necessity. - This incident was one of two rescues from Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) huts on the same day. A 75-year-old man from Acton, Massachusetts, experienced a medical emergency at the Zealand Hut and was evacuated by a Fish and Game snowmobile. - Officials described Gabis's hiking group as "well-prepared," yet the incident highlights the unpredictable nature of icy conditions. New Hampshire Fish and Game officials consistently warn that even minor injuries can become life-threatening in harsh winter environments due to the risk of hypothermia. - To promote safety and help fund rescue operations, New Hampshire offers a voluntary "Hike Safe" card for $25 per individual or $35 per family. Cardholders may be exempt from repaying rescue costs if their actions are not deemed negligent.
