Fitbit Brings AI Fitness to iPhones
Fitbit just launched advanced AI-powered fitness analysis for iPhone users, marking a shift from hardware-centric to cross-platform service strategies. The update brings context-aware coaching that adapts workout plans based on sleep quality, stress levels, and environmental factors.
This new AI-powered "Personal Health Coach" is built on Google's Gemini models, moving beyond generic advice to become a conversational partner that analyzes your personal Fitbit data. The system was fine-tuned for health and fitness with over 1 million human annotations and 100,000 hours of human evaluation. Access to the AI coach requires a Fitbit Premium subscription, which costs $9.99 per month. The feature, currently in a public preview, launched for Android users in October 2025 and became available to iPhone users starting in February 2026. The service is more than a simple chatbot; it analyzes historical data like sleep patterns, heart rate variability, and daily activity to create adaptable plans. You can ask it to create a marathon training plan or for a suitable workout if you've had a poor night's sleep, and it will adjust accordingly. This software-focused, cross-platform strategy marks a significant direction for Fitbit since its acquisition by Google in 2021. It positions Fitbit as a more direct competitor to services like Apple's Fitness+, especially as reports suggest Apple is scaling back its own ambitions for a similar AI-driven health coaching service.
