Multi-Town Hazardous Waste Collection This Weekend

- Several towns are holding a home hazardous waste collection event this weekend in Farmington. - Avon, Canton, Granby, Simsbury, Suffield and Farmington are participating; the first collection is scheduled in Farmington. - Residents should bring accepted household hazardous items; details on acceptable materials and locations are online (patch.com).

Residents of six Farmington Valley towns can bring household hazardous waste to Farmington High School on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (farmington-ct.org) The collection is open to people from Avon, Canton, Farmington, Granby, Simsbury and Suffield, and proof of residency is required at drop-off. (granby-ct.gov) Farmington High School is at 10 Monteith Drive, and the April 25 event is the first of three regional collections scheduled for 2026. The other two are June 13 and Oct. 10 at the Simsbury Public Works Facility, 66 Town Forest Road. (farmington-ct.org) These collections are for materials that should not go in regular trash, including pesticides, paints, cleaning chemicals and antifreeze. Town notices say the program is meant to keep those materials out of landfills and transfer stations. (avonct.gov) Simsbury’s notice says a full list of accepted household items is posted online, and towns are directing residents to check rules before loading their cars. Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also tells residents to confirm local restrictions in advance. (simsbury-ct.gov) (portal.ct.gov) Granby’s announcement says personal document shredding will also be available on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or until the truck fills. News releases from participating towns say residents should remain in their vehicles and follow attendants’ directions through the site. (granby-ct.gov) (ct-granby.civicplus.com) The regional setup also marks a change for some residents. A Canton press release says the town is no longer participating in the Metropolitan District Commission collection program, so Canton residents can no longer use Metropolitan District Commission hazardous waste events. (townofcantonct.org) For this weekend, the practical deadline is simple: residents who miss Saturday’s Farmington stop will have two more chances this year, both in Simsbury. (farmington-ct.org)
