NFL Combine Highlights Draft Risers
The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine is producing several draft "risers" after standout performances, with Michigan State cornerback Thompson posting the fastest 40-yard dash of the day. Sunday's schedule features defensive backs and specialists in workouts, while wide receivers are drawing particular attention in what's considered a deep class at the position.
While Michigan State's cornerback Thompson turned heads, Mississippi State wideout Brenen Thompson also made headlines with a blistering 4.26-second 40-yard dash, the fastest among all wide receivers at the combine. This time ties him for the fourth-fastest in the history of the event, showcasing his game-breaking speed. The buzz around the deep wide receiver class extends beyond just speed. UConn's Skyler Bell impressed with a well-rounded performance, running a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash and ranking in the top three at his position with a 41-inch vertical and an 11-foot-1-inch broad jump. Georgia State's Ted Hurst, at 6-foot-4, also stood out by leading all receivers with an 11-foot-3-inch broad jump and running a swift 4.42-second 40-yard dash. Defensive players are also elevating their draft stock significantly. Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles put on a show, leading all prospects with a 43.5-inch vertical jump, a new all-time record for a linebacker at the combine. He also posted an 11-foot, 2-inch broad jump, the fourth-best ever for his position, and ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash. In the trenches, Penn State defensive tackle Zane Durant caught attention by running a 4.76-second 40-yard dash, a faster time than some notable quarterbacks. Among edge rushers, UCF's Malachi Lawrence recorded a 40-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jump, both ranking second at his position. The quarterback class has a clear frontrunner in Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, who is widely expected to be the first overall pick. However, he chose not to throw at the combine, opening the door for others to shine. With Mendoza on the sidelines, the race for the second and third quarterback spots is heating up. Alabama's Ty Simpson is largely considered the likely QB2. Meanwhile, a trio of quarterbacks—LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Miami's Carson Beck, and Penn State's Drew Allar—are all vying for the QB3 position, with Beck currently seen as the slight favorite.
