Huawei Unveils 896-Channel Automotive LiDAR

Huawei has revealed a next-generation automotive LiDAR system featuring 896 channels and a dual-optical architecture. The new hardware promises to dramatically improve the resolution and detection range for autonomous vehicles, a key step in advancing self-driving capabilities.

The new sensor represents a significant leap from the industry's previous mass-produced high of 520 lines and far surpasses the more common 128-line LiDAR units currently in use. This jump in vertical scanning lines creates a much denser 3D point cloud, improving the system's ability to accurately identify smaller objects and complex shapes. This system's dual-optical path architecture, a first for the industry, integrates two laser receiving units with different focal lengths. One unit provides a wide-angle view for a broad environmental overview, while the other focuses on long-distance details, creating a "picture-in-picture" effect for the vehicle's perception system. According to Jin Yuzhi, CEO of Huawei's Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU, the new hardware can consistently identify small objects just 14 centimeters high from 120 meters away. This enhanced perception also improves the detection range for low-reflectivity targets like fallen tires by 190% and irregular obstacles by 77%. The advancement is part of a broader industry "race" toward high-line-count LiDARs to enable Level 3 (L3) and higher autonomous driving capabilities. Competitors like Hesai Technology have recently launched 512-channel LiDARs, while RoboSense offers a system with an equivalent of 500 beams, both targeting long-range detection. The 896-channel LiDAR will first be deployed on the Aito M9 and Maextro S800, two flagship models under Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA). Following this debut, other Huawei-affiliated brands and partners such as Avatr and Voyah are also slated to integrate the new sensor into their upcoming vehicles.
