Terry Brooks Semi-Retires at 81
Fantasy legend Terry Brooks announced his semi-retirement from writing at age 81, citing the increasing difficulty and time required to write. The Shannara universe will continue under Delilah Dawson, with Brooks serving as advisor and editor to maintain creative continuity.
Terry Brooks's career spans nearly five decades, beginning with the publication of *The Sword of Shannara* in 1977. He has written more than 40 books, with over 33 of them set in the Shannara universe, selling over 50 million copies worldwide. His work has been a consistent presence on bestseller lists, with around 23 of his novels making it to the New York Times bestseller list. *The Sword of Shannara* is often credited with helping to revive the epic fantasy genre. Upon its release, the book drew both praise and criticism for its similarities to J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*, a comparison that has been a long-standing topic of discussion among fantasy readers. Despite the initial critiques, the book's success demonstrated a significant commercial audience for fantasy literature. The Shannara series is notable for its setting in a post-apocalyptic version of our world, known as the Four Lands, where magic has re-emerged after a great war destroyed modern civilization. This blend of science fiction and fantasy elements sets it apart from many other works in the genre. The full series includes multiple sub-series and prequel trilogies, with a complex chronological order that is distinct from the publication order. Delilah S. Dawson, who will be taking over the Shannara series, is an accomplished author in the fantasy and science fiction genres. She has extensive experience writing within established universes, having penned novels for major franchises such as *Star Wars*, including *Phasma* and *Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire*. Her work is known for its lyrical prose and for subverting common tropes. The continuation of a literary universe by a chosen successor is not unprecedented in the fantasy genre. A notable example is Robert Jordan's sprawling *The Wheel of Time* series, which was completed by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's death, following his widow's and editor's selection. Beyond the main Shannara saga, Brooks has also authored the *Magic Kingdom of Landover* series, a comedic fantasy, and other works including novelizations for the films *Hook* and *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace*. The Shannara series itself was adapted into a two-season television show on MTV.
