Marin Shakespeare Company is staging a bilingual “La Comedia of Errors” in Spanish and English at its Downtown Theater in San Rafael through May 10. (marinshakespeare.org) The production runs at 514 Fourth Street and reworks Shakespeare’s farce of two separated sets of twins into a telenovela-style comedy with music and physical gags. The adaptation is by Bill Rauch and Lydia G. García, based on Alfredo Michel Modenessi’s Spanish version of the play. (marinshakespeare.org) Director Karina Gutiérrez leads the show in partnership with Play On Shakespeare, and Marin Shakespeare says the cast includes Deanalís Arocho Resto, Hugo Carbajal and Christian Arteaga. A Pacific Sun review said the opening monologue plays without dialogue and relies on physical comedy to carry audiences across both languages. (marinshakespeare.org) (pacificsun.com) The original play is one of Shakespeare’s shortest comedies, built around mistaken identity, beatings, reunions and two masters with two servants who share the same names. In this version, Marin Shakespeare and its partners place that plot inside a Spanish-English frame that foregrounds immigration, forced separation and belonging. (marinshakespeare.org) (pacificsun.com) That framing shows up in the student matinee program too. Marin Shakespeare is presenting school performances on April 17, April 23 and May 1, each at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with a 90-minute runtime, a 20-minute actor question-and-answer session, and a recommendation for grades 5 and up. (marinshakespeare.org) Ticket prices for the public run from $15 to $49, according to Marin County Visitor and Pacific Sun. Pacific Sun listed weekend performances at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, plus a 7:30 p.m. Saturday show. (marincountyvisitor.com) (pacificsun.com) The company is also tying the run to local outreach. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Marin is hosting a special April 26 performance with a post-show “Meet the Players” reception at the theater. (hccmarin.com) Reviews and promotional material have stressed that the bilingual format does not require audiences to speak both languages to follow the story. Pacific Sun said the cast’s movement and staging make the plot legible even for one-language viewers, while Marin County Visitor described the show as a community-focused take for Marin audiences. (pacificsun.com) (marincountyvisitor.com) For Marin Shakespeare, the run also extends a broader push beyond summer outdoor productions at Forest Meadows. The company is using its indoor San Rafael theater for this spring staging and for student performances built around access, transit and classroom connections. (marinshakespeare.org 1) (marinshakespeare.org 2) The result is a Shakespeare comedy playing in two languages, in a 90-minute format, a few blocks from downtown San Rafael. The run continues through Sunday, May 10. (marinshakespeare.org)
