Streisand's honor will be bestowed during the festival's opening ceremony on May 14. She is the first American woman director to receive the honor. Streisand's relationship with Cannes dates back to 1980 when she presented a non-competition cut of "Yentl". The festival is calling her a "universal icon". She joins a small list of individuals to receive the Honorary Palme d'Or, including Jeanne Moreau, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jane Fonda, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Manoel de Oliveira, Agnès Varda, and Alain Delon. Forest Whitaker received the honor in 2022.
