Red Rock Canyon Rescue
A climber was rescued after a fall on the Dream Safari route at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas during a seven-hour operation involving multiple agencies. The dramatic rescue showcased both the risks and rewards of outdoor climbing in one of Nevada's premier climbing destinations.
The climber who fell 40 to 50 feet on the "Dream Safari" route sustained severe head and back injuries. His climbing partner and a nearby guide were able to reach him and control the bleeding while awaiting rescue. Despite being destroyed in the fall, the climber's helmet has been credited with likely saving his life. The rescue took place in Pine Creek Canyon on a feature known as the Dark Shadows Wall. The injured climber was at the top of the first pitch, approximately 600 feet above the ground. The "Dream Safari" route is a multi-pitch traditional climb, with a challenging difficulty rating of 5.10 to 5.11, indicating it is for experienced climbers. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue (SAR) unit executed a complex, seven-hour operation. Four SAR officers and a volunteer from the Lead Climb team were inserted by helicopter several hundred feet above the injured climber. They then rappelled down to provide medical aid before lowering him to the ground using a system of three separate lowering stations. LVMPD's Search and Rescue unit is a composite team of eight full-time commissioned officers and a significant number of civilian volunteers. These volunteers, who must pass a thorough background check and skills tests, are on call 24/7, 365 days a year to respond to incidents in Red Rock, Lake Mead, and throughout Southern Nevada. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sees over 3 million visitors annually, and while most visits are without incident, dozens of rescues occur each year. Between 2021 and 2023, the LVMPD Search and Rescue Unit assisted 181 people in the park. In 2024 alone, the air support unit conducted 91 search and rescue operations in the region. Over 30% of rescues in Red Rock happen in three areas known for advanced climbing: Juniper Canyon, Kraft Mountain, and Black Velvet Canyon. The area's reputation as a world-class climbing destination attracts both highly skilled climbers and beginners who may sometimes attempt routes beyond their abilities.
