Slay the Spire 2 Breaks Records
Slay the Spire 2 smashed Steam with 179,456 concurrent players at early access launch — a new roguelike record that briefly crashed Steam servers. The deckbuilder sequel is now out with co-op features, building on the original's formula with multiplayer support.
The sequel's launch didn't just break records; it dwarfed the original game's lifetime peak performance. *Slay the Spire 2* saw its concurrent player count soar past 179,000 within hours, a figure that continued to climb above 282,000. For comparison, the first *Slay the Spire*'s all-time peak was approximately 57,000 players, a number the sequel surpassed almost immediately. Developer Mega Crit rebuilt the game from the ground up in the Godot engine, a switch from the original's foundation. This change was made to better support more fluid animations and, crucially, the game's new multiplayer framework. The early access version is currently exclusive to PC, with a full 1.0 release, and eventual console versions, tentatively planned for 2027. Two new classes join the returning Ironclad, Silent, and Defect. The Necrobinder fights alongside a skeletal hand named Osty that tanks damage and can be used offensively. The Regent introduces a unique resource called Stars and a Forge mechanic, allowing for the progressive upgrade of a single attack card throughout a run. The new four-player co-op mode is a separate experience from the solo game, featuring multiplayer-specific cards and synergies. Players navigate the same map but manage their own decks, health, and resources, allowing them to split up to tackle different nodes before converging for boss fights. While debuffs are shared, so are all incoming enemy attacks.
