Anduril Founder Meets with Israeli PM

The founder of U.S. defense technology company Anduril visited Israel and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The discreet visit signals the potential for deeper collaboration between the AI-driven defense firm and Israel's technology and defense sectors.

- Anduril's founder, Palmer Luckey, previously founded Oculus VR, the virtual reality company he started at age 19 and sold to Facebook (now Meta) for approximately $2 billion in 2014. He founded Anduril in 2017, shifting his focus from consumer VR to AI-powered defense technology. - The company's core product is Lattice, an AI software platform that uses sensor fusion to create a real-time, 3D model of a battlespace. It serves as the command and control system for Anduril's hardware, which includes autonomous surveillance towers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and counter-drone interceptors. - During the visit, Luckey met with approximately 10 Israeli defense-technology startups in meetings arranged by Israel's Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D). The stated goal was to explore potential partnerships and acquisitions, signaling a deeper interest than just product sales. - The visit occurs as Anduril is reportedly in talks to raise up to $8 billion at a valuation of at least $60 billion, nearly double its valuation from June of the previous year. This capital would help finance a major weapons-manufacturing facility and the development of an autonomous fighter jet. - Israel's defense strategy is increasingly focused on technological independence and innovation in areas like AI, autonomous systems, and laser air defense, such as the recently operational Iron Beam system. This aligns with Anduril’s focus on software-defined, autonomous hardware. - Anduril specializes in rapidly developing and deploying autonomous systems like the "Fury" unmanned aircraft and the "Roadrunner-M," a reusable, jet-powered drone designed to intercept aerial threats. The company has secured major contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense, including a nearly $1 billion deal with Special Operations Command. - The trip was organized by Josh Wolfe, co-founder of Lux Capital, an early investor in Anduril. Lux Capital has reportedly increased its investment focus on Israel's defense sector since the outbreak of war in October 2023.
