Largest U.S. Asian Supermarket Coming to Fremont

The upcoming 100,000-square-foot H Mart in Fremont is set to become the Korean-American supermarket chain's largest in the U.S., representing the company's most significant investment in its history. Construction is planned to begin in late 2026 at the Pacific Commons Shopping Center, taking over a former Kohl's building at 43782 Christy St. This new flagship store will feature a two-story design, a first of its kind for H Mart, with the ground floor dedicated to groceries and the second level housing a food hall with various eateries, a bar, and community spaces. The concept aims to create an immersive destination that combines shopping with dining and entertainment. The choice of Fremont is strategic, as the city's population is nearly 64% Asian, making it a key market for international grocery retailers. This demographic reality has attracted numerous Asian supermarket chains to the Bay Area, creating a competitive landscape. H Mart, which started as a single store in Queens, New York, in 1982, has grown to over 97 locations across the U.S. and is recognized as the country's largest Asian supermarket chain. The Fremont location will be its fourth in the Bay Area, with other stores in San Francisco and San Jose, and another planned for Dublin. The expansion of H Mart is part of a broader trend of Asian supermarket growth in the region. Competitors include the established 99 Ranch Market, which has multiple stores in the Bay Area, and the rapidly expanding Canadian chain T&T Supermarket, which plans to open three new locations. Other significant players include Seafood City, which focuses on Filipino products, and the recently opened Jagalchi, a large Korean food complex.
