Agility Robotics Deploys Humanoids in Toyota Plant

Agility Robotics has secured a commercial deal to deploy its Digit humanoid robot in a Toyota manufacturing plant in Canada. The deployment marks an expansion for the Digit robot from logistics environments into automotive factory settings. This represents a significant real-world application of humanoid robots in an industrial capacity.

- The commercial agreement follows a successful year-long pilot program at Toyota's facility in Woodstock, Ontario, which involved three Digit robots. The new deal, based on a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, will see seven more Digit units deployed. - Agility Robotics' Digit stands 5' 9" tall, weighs 140 lbs, and can carry a payload of up to 35 lbs. It navigates using a sensor suite that includes LiDAR and four Intel RealSense depth cameras. - The company's cloud-based platform, Agility Arc, is used to deploy and manage fleets of Digit robots, allowing for integration with existing factory management systems and rapid implementation of new tasks. - Agility Robotics has raised approximately $641 million in total funding, with a Series C round in March 2025 valuing the company at around $2.12 billion. Key investors include Amazon's Industrial Innovation Fund, DCVC, and Playground Global. - The automotive industry is a key testing ground for humanoid robots, with competitors like Figure AI deploying its Figure 02 robot at BMW's South Carolina plant and Tesla developing its own Optimus humanoid for its factories. - Toyota has a long history of investing in automation and established the Toyota Research Institute with a $1 billion investment to focus on AI and robotics for automotive applications.
