Michelin’s Great Lakes push
Michelin has rolled out a new “American Great Lakes” region that brings cities such as Milwaukee into its U.S. coverage, expanding the guide beyond legacy food capitals. (wtmj.com) The local coverage frames the move as putting Milwaukee “on the Michelin map” and positioning multiple Great Lakes food cities to compete for the same dining prestige Michelin traditionally reserved for larger metros. Michelin has added an “American Great Lakes” edition to its United States coverage, bringing Milwaukee into the guide for the first time. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the new region on April 7 and said inspectors will cover six cities: Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. The inaugural restaurant selection is scheduled to be revealed in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) The move extends Michelin’s United States footprint beyond its older city-by-city strongholds such as New York, Chicago, Washington, and California. Michelin’s United States restaurant directory now lists 1,760 restaurants nationwide. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Michelin has recently shifted toward regional rollouts instead of single-city launches. Its American South guide debuted in November 2025 with 159 selected restaurants, including 18 one-star restaurants and one two-star restaurant. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) That matters for Great Lakes cities because Michelin stars, Bib Gourmand awards, and recommendation listings can redirect tourism and reshape how diners rank a market. Chicago’s tourism agency says the city currently has 21 Michelin-star restaurants and 33 Bib Gourmand picks. (choosechicago.com) The Great Lakes edition also groups together cities that usually compete for chefs, conventions, and weekend travelers rather than treating each one as a stand-alone market. Michelin used the same multi-state model in the South, spanning Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) The guide’s expansion model has often involved tourism partnerships. When Michelin entered Florida in 2021, it said the rollout paired Visit Florida’s tourism network with Michelin’s restaurant inspectors. (guide.michelin.com, visitfloridamedia.com) Colorado followed a similar path. Michelin’s 2023 Colorado launch produced 44 recognized restaurants, including five one-star restaurants and four green-star restaurants, after what state industry groups described as an earlier destination study and a formal tourism partnership. (michelin.com, corestaurant.org) For Milwaukee and the other five cities, the next milestone is not a star announcement but a waiting period. Michelin says inspectors are now working the region, and the first Great Lakes results will not arrive until 2027. (guide.michelin.com)
