Boracay's White Beach Ranks 6th in Asia

Boracay's White Beach ranked 6th on TripAdvisor's list of Asia's best beaches for 2026, maintaining its status as a darling of international travelers. Its blend of fine sand, clear waters, and lively social scene keep it at the forefront of must-visit destinations for beach enthusiasts.

This latest accolade is part of a continued string of international recognition for Boracay since its extensive rehabilitation. The island has also been named among the top islands in Asia by Condé Nast Traveler in 2025 and one of the World's Greatest Places by Time Magazine in 2022. The high ranking follows a drastic six-month closure of the island to tourists in 2018. The shutdown was ordered by then-President Rodrigo Duterte, who had labeled the popular destination a "cesspool" due to overwhelming environmental degradation, including sewage and waste management issues. The rehabilitation involved a massive clean-up effort, the demolition of illegal structures built too close to the shoreline, and a complete overhaul of the island's inadequate sewage and drainage systems. At some points prior to the closure, fecal coliform levels in the water were 47 times higher than the acceptable standard. Upon reopening in October 2018, strict new rules were implemented to manage the environmental impact of tourism. These included a cap on daily tourist arrivals, a requirement for visitors to book accommodations at government-accredited establishments, and a ban on smoking, drinking, and beachfront parties on the White Beach. The six-month closure had a significant economic impact, with a projected loss of P18-20 billion in gross receipts and the displacement of an estimated 30,000 workers. The government provided financial aid to affected residents and workers during the shutdown. In the 2026 TripAdvisor list, Boracay's White Beach was surpassed by Banana Beach in Thailand, Kelingking Beach in Indonesia, Radhanagar and Palolem beaches in India, and Mirissa Beach in Sri Lanka. Despite a dip in visitor arrivals in late 2024 compared to the previous year, the island's tourism numbers have largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels. The Department of Tourism remains optimistic, highlighting that the international awards support the livelihoods of thousands of Filipinos in the tourism sector.
