7-Hour Climbing Rescue at Red Rock

Search and rescue teams completed a dramatic 7-hour mission to airlift climbers to safety after incidents at Red Rock Canyon. One climber was injured after a fall on the Dream Safari route, leading to a complex operation involving both helicopter and ground crews. The rescue highlights both the risks of technical climbing and the professionalism of local SAR teams.

The climber's 40-to-50-foot fall resulted in severe head and back injuries, prompting a large-scale rescue operation. Before professional crews arrived, the injured climber's partner and a guide from a separate climbing party managed to reach the individual and control the bleeding. The victim was stranded approximately 600 feet above the ground on the first pitch of the "Dream Safari" route, which is located on the Dark Shadows Wall in Pine Creek. This location necessitated a complex technical rescue. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team inserted four officers and one lead climb volunteer via helicopter to a position several hundred feet above the injured climber. The rescuers then rappelled down to the climber's location to provide immediate medical treatment. To extract the climber, the SAR team secured them in a titanium litter and constructed a multi-stage lowering system. They carefully lowered the victim several hundred feet to the ground using three separate stations before they could be transported to a waiting ambulance. The entire rescue mission, from the initial insertion of the team to their final extraction from the canyon, took approximately seven hours. Police officials stated that while the climber's helmet was destroyed in the fall, it very likely saved their life. The injured climber is reportedly recovering and in good spirits. The rescue involved a combination of commissioned officers and volunteer professionals who are on call 24/7. In 2025, the LVMPD's Air Support Unit conducted 64 search and rescue helicopter operations.
