Rams Sign CB McDuffie to Record Extension

The Los Angeles Rams are locking down their secondary, signing cornerback Trent McDuffie to a record contract extension. The move signals the team's commitment to investing in top-tier defensive talent as free agency approaches.

The four-year, $124 million extension for Trent McDuffie includes $100 million in guaranteed money, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the history of the NFL. This deal surpasses the previous records for total value, guaranteed money, and average annual value for the position. McDuffie's average annual salary of $31 million eclipses that of other top cornerbacks, including Sauce Gardner of the Indianapolis Colts ($30.1 million) and Derek Stingley Jr. of the Houston Texans ($30 million). Prior to this agreement, only three other cornerbacks in the league had contracts valued at $100 million or more. The Rams acquired McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs just days before the record-setting extension. The trade sent a significant package of draft picks to the Chiefs, including the Rams' 2026 first-round pick (No. 29 overall), a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick, and a third-round pick in 2027. This aggressive move to secure a top-tier cornerback addresses a major area of need for the Rams. The team had four cornerbacks heading towards free agency and also saw veteran Darious Williams announce his retirement. McDuffie, a two-time All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, is now positioned as the cornerstone of the Rams' secondary. The 25-year-old McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract after the Chiefs had picked up his fifth-year option. During the 2025 season with Kansas City, he recorded 63 tackles, seven pass breakups, and one interception in 13 starts. This isn't the first time the Rams have committed record-breaking contracts to key players. The organization has a history of signing top talent to historic deals, including quarterback Jared Goff, running back Todd Gurley, defensive lineman Aaron Donald, and cornerback Jalen Ramsey. By locking up McDuffie, the Rams solidify their defense as they aim to build on a season that saw them reach the NFC Championship Game. The team still holds a first-round pick in the 2026 draft, No. 13 overall, which was acquired from the Atlanta Falcons.
