BlackSky Wins Contract for International Customer

Space-based intelligence company BlackSky has received a seven-figure contract to accelerate space capabilities for an international defense customer. The company stated the contract continues the momentum for its Gen-3 satellite constellation. The award signals intensifying demand for commercial space services from allied defense and intelligence organizations.

- BlackSky's Gen-3 satellites provide very high-resolution 35-centimeter imagery, allowing for the automated detection and classification of vehicles, aircraft, and vessels. The company currently has three Gen-3 satellites in orbit and plans to launch eight more by the end of the year to increase revisit rates. - This contract is part of a "land-and-expand" strategy, where initial pilot programs with international defense customers are converted into larger, multi-year subscription renewals. BlackSky has recently secured multiple Gen-3 expansion contracts with customers in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. - The agreement provides the unnamed international customer with "Assured" access, which guarantees priority tasking and uncontested access to both Gen-2 and Gen-3 imagery over their areas of interest. This service is designed for customers to have reliable, real-time intelligence for their daily workflows and to monitor threats as they evolve. - In addition to imagery, the contract includes AI-enabled analytics and support for the customer's sovereign space capabilities, including ground station and flight operations support. BlackSky's Spectra AI platform can identify objects and provide analytics in near real-time, often in less than a minute. - BlackSky has a history of working with U.S. defense and intelligence agencies, including multiple Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards. The company holds a $900 million IDIQ contract with the Defense Information Systems Agency and has provided AI data readiness support to the Department of Defense. - The broader commercial satellite imaging market was valued at approximately $7.49 billion in 2026 and is projected to grow to over $13.6 billion by 2031. The defense and intelligence sector is the fastest-growing application area, with a projected compound annual growth rate of over 11%. - The company has also secured contracts to provide its services to defense and intelligence agencies in Latin America to combat transnational organized crime. - BlackSky's platform is capable of imaging a single location up to 15 times per day, providing a high revisit rate that supports the monitoring of patterns of life and detecting anomalies.
