Torrey Pines Shows Off Ocean Views

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is highlighting two ocean-facing trails with sweeping Pacific views and vibrant coastal wildflowers this week. The San Diego Union-Tribune spotlights these trails as both accessible and visually stunning, making it perfect timing for a spring walk or run.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a 2,000-acre coastal park, one of the wildest stretches of land on the Southern California coast. The reserve was established in 1899 when the San Diego City Council set aside 364 acres of the ancestral homelands of the Kumeyaay people. Philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps later donated additional land to expand the protected area. The reserve is named for the *Pinus torreyana*, North America's rarest pine tree. This critically endangered species grows only in this coastal area of San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island, located 175 miles away off the coast of Santa Barbara. Before being named in 1850 by botanist Charles Christopher Parry in honor of his mentor, Dr. John Torrey, the trees were known as Soledad Pines, meaning "solitary pines," by early Spanish explorers. The highlighted Guy Fleming Trail is a relatively easy 0.7-mile loop known for its stunning ocean overlooks and diverse display of wildflowers in the spring. Another popular route, the Razor Point Trail, is a 1.4-mile round-trip path that offers dramatic views of the sculpted sandstone ravines and badlands, culminating at a spectacular ocean lookout. Visitors in the spring may encounter a variety of coastal wildflowers, including sea dahlia, wild heliotrope, California poppy, and monkeyflower. The reserve is also home to a variety of wildlife, such as bobcats, coyotes, rabbits, and foxes. During the winter months, migrating gray and humpback whales can sometimes be spotted from the cliffside trails.
