Bay Area Protests Follow Military Strikes

Anti-war demonstrations erupted across the Bay Area on Saturday, less than 24 hours after recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes. The rapid mobilization reflects an immediate local reaction to the escalating international conflict.

The joint U.S.-Israeli military operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," began on Friday, February 28, 2026, targeting Iran's leadership, security forces, and nuclear program. The strikes were described by President Donald Trump as a "massive and ongoing" campaign aimed at neutralizing an existential threat and encouraging the Iranian people to "take back" their country. One of the most significant outcomes of the initial volley of attacks was the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had ruled for over three decades. The strikes, which involved B-2 stealth bombers and 100 Israeli fighter jets, also killed approximately 40 other senior Iranian officials. In retaliation, Iran launched hundreds of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. military bases in several neighboring Arab states, including Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. This response marked a significant escalation compared to previous conflicts, with Iran directly targeting the civilian and economic infrastructure of regional adversaries. The Bay Area demonstrations were part of a rapid, multi-group effort organized in the hours after the strikes were announced. Groups such as the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Palestinian Youth Movement organized the San Francisco rally, which drew several hundred people to the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building. Protesters and local political figures, including Governor Gavin Newsom, denounced the military action as an unconstitutional and "illegal, dangerous war" initiated without congressional approval. The demonstration in San Francisco featured speakers who framed the strikes as part of a longer history of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East. This recent military engagement is the second major U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran in less than a year, following a 12-day series of strikes in June 2025 that targeted Iran's air defenses and nuclear program. The current conflict represents a significant expansion in both scope and stated ambition, openly aiming for regime change.
