Vestas Inks 50-MW Wind Deal in Germany
Vestas Wind Systems A/S has signed a contract to supply seven wind turbines for a 50-megawatt project in Germany with envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG. The project is a notable step in bolstering the country's renewable energy capacity and advancing its climate goals.
The seven turbines for the project are Vestas' V162-7.2 MW model from its EnVentus platform. This model is designed for medium to high wind sites and features a 162-meter rotor diameter, with hub heights reaching up to 169 meters. The EnVentus platform emphasizes modular design for easier transport and servicing over the turbine's lifetime. This project contributes to Germany's ambitious "Onshore Wind Energy Act," which aims to almost double the country's onshore wind capacity from 64 GW in 2023 to 115 GW by 2030. The legislation mandates that 2% of Germany's land be allocated for onshore wind by 2032, a significant increase from the previous 0.5%. From 2025 onwards, Germany plans to install 10 GW of new onshore wind capacity annually. The project is located in Brandenburg, a state with the second-most installed onshore wind capacity in Germany. In 2025, Brandenburg commissioned 622 MW of new wind capacity, nearly double the amount from 2024, and granted permits for an additional 1,500 MW. EnviaM, the project's commissioner, is also heavily invested in solar power in the region, with plans for over 700 MW of solar PV projects in central Germany. Vestas is focused on reducing the environmental impact of its products, aiming for zero-waste turbines by 2040 and carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030 without offsets. Currently, Vestas turbines are 85% recyclable, with the main challenge being the composite materials in the blades. The company is actively researching solutions for blade recycling through initiatives like the CETEC project.
