Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has unveiled a significant expansion into Egypt, including new hotels on the Nile and its first-ever luxury river cruise. - The expansion is a partnership with Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG) Holding, a major player in Egypt's luxury development sector. TMG's hospitality arm, ICON, recently acquired a portfolio of historic state-owned hotels, including these properties, signaling a significant push to elevate Egypt's luxury tourism infrastructure. - The Cairo hotel, a rebranding of the 19th-century Shepheard Hotel, will feature 188 rooms and 88 suites. Its renovation is being led by French interior designer Sybille de Margerie, known for a "quiet luxury" aesthetic that balances modernity with heritage, focusing on refined details and the harmony of colors over ostentatious displays. - The two properties outside of Cairo are the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan and the Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor, both with deep historical significance. The Old Cataract famously hosted guests like Tsar Nicholas II and Winston Churchill and is where Agatha Christie wrote parts of *Death on the Nile*. The Winter Palace was a regular retreat for Lord Carnarvon, the patron of the Tutankhamun excavation, and it was from this hotel that Howard Carter announced the discovery of the tomb. - The Mandarin Oriental, Nile Cruise is the brand's first venture into river cruising and will feature generously sized suites, three dining venues, and a dedicated wellness space. Itineraries will be curated to include immersive cultural programming such as expert-led talks and exclusive shore excursions, moving beyond standard tourism to offer deeper cultural engagement. - This portfolio is designed to create an integrated, seamless journey for guests across Egypt.
