MN Licensing Exam Prep Focuses on 2023 NEC
For electricians planning to get their Minnesota contractor license, exam prep providers are now offering seminars focused on the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC). This signals that the 2023 code is the core text for current exam preparation and field practice, making it essential study material.
The Minnesota Board of Electricity officially adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) with an effective date of July 1, 2023. All electrical licensing exams transitioned to the new code just over two weeks later, on July 17, 2023. Unlike some other states, Minnesota adopts the NEC wholesale without any state-specific amendments. This means electricians must be proficient in the national standard as published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). A major focus of the 2023 update for residential work is the expansion of Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) protection. All receptacles in a kitchen now require GFCI protection, regardless of their proximity to a sink. The GFCI requirements were also extended to cover several specific appliances, including all clothes dryers, wall-mounted ovens, countertop cooking units, and microwaves. Any cord-and-plug-connected appliance in a kitchen must now have GFCI protection. Another significant change impacts kitchen islands and peninsulas. Receptacles can no longer be installed on the side of the island; they must be pop-up style receptacles installed on the countertop surface itself. Data on recent license exams underscores the value of structured training. While the overall pass rate for Journeyworker and Master Electrician exams hovers around 69-72%, applicants coming from a registered apprenticeship program have a 90.9% pass rate. Looking ahead, electricians should anticipate a major overhaul with the 2026 NEC. The code is set to be reorganized from its current 9-chapter structure into a more modular 30-chapter format, representing one of the most significant restructurings in decades.
