Firefighter Hiring Heats Up Nationally
Fire departments across the country are actively recruiting, with several application deadlines approaching. The Saint Paul Fire Department is accepting applications until February 27, while Fishers Fire Department in Indiana has a deadline of March 2. The National Testing Network also shared openings for career firefighter roles in Fort Lupton, Colorado, and Franklin, Tennessee, highlighting a competitive hiring landscape.
- The Seattle Fire Department's next entry-level application period will open on October 7, 2025, and run through November 25, 2025; the hiring register established from this process in March 2026 will be for recruit classes starting in August 2026 and February 2027. - Candidates must pass the FireTEAM test, which is a 2.5-hour video-based exam covering reading, math, mechanical reasoning, and human relations. The top 1,500 scoring candidates are then invited to the oral board interviews, which are held in-person in the Seattle area. - The physical exam is the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), a pass/fail test consisting of eight events completed in under 10 minutes and 20 seconds while wearing a weighted vest. The SFD provides vouchers for two mandatory orientations and two practice tests administered by the National Testing Network. - Oral board interviews in Western Washington often utilize the STAR method, where candidates are asked to describe a Situation, Task, Action, and Result to answer behavioral questions. The interview panel typically consists of experienced fire department officials. - SFD's station culture is often described as a "family unit," as firefighters live together for 24-hour shifts while on duty. The department, which has 33 fire stations, was officially established as a paid, professional service on October 17, 1889, following the Great Seattle Fire. - For early-career financial planning, experts advise firefighters to build an emergency fund covering three to six months of living expenses. Beyond the standard pension, firefighters are encouraged to make supplemental retirement contributions to accounts like a 457(b) plan. - Functional fitness preparation for the CPAT should focus on exercises that improve cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance, simulating the specific demands of the eight events, which include a stair climb with a weighted pack, hose drag, and equipment carry.
