Summer bookings shift

Travel demand is tilting toward Iberia and cooler northern destinations for summer: Spain and Portugal are seeing a surge in late‑spring and summer flight and hotel bookings as tourists avoid the Middle East (reuters.com). At the same time, searches for Nordic destinations — Norway, Iceland and Finland — have jumped by triple digits for June–August, and Oman Air plans Salalah flights from July 3 operating three times weekly ( ).

Spain and Portugal are drawing a rush of summer travelers as bookings swing away from Middle East routes and hubs. (uk.finance.yahoo.com) As of April 2, summer flight bookings to Spain, including transit, were up 32% from a year earlier, while hotel searches rose 28%, according to Sojern data reported by Reuters. Portugal recorded a 21% rise in flight bookings and a 16% increase in hotel searches. (uk.finance.yahoo.com) Reuters reported the shift on April 15, citing travelers steering away from war-affected destinations and aviation hubs in and around the Middle East. The change is showing up in late-spring and summer demand rather than in a new travel restriction inside Iberia itself. (uk.finance.yahoo.com) A second lane of demand is moving north. Wego said searches for Norway, Iceland and Finland for June through August 2026 have jumped by triple digits as travelers look for cooler summer weather. (blog.wego.com) Wego tied that demand to the “coolcation” trend, travel industry shorthand for choosing mild summer destinations over hotter beach markets. In Northern Norway alone, overnight stays in June through August 2025 reached 2.37 million, up 12% from the previous year, according to the Northern Norway Tourist Board figures cited by Wego. (blog.wego.com) The shift is also changing short-haul options for Gulf travelers who want relief from peak summer heat without a long Europe trip. Wego’s summer guide said Oman’s Salalah is benefiting from that demand because the khareef monsoon turns the Dhofar region green during July and August. (blog.wego.com) Oman Air plans to start Dubai-Salalah flights on July 3, 2026, operating three times a week, according to travel industry reports and Wego’s guide. That gives Gulf travelers another regional summer route as Iberia and the Nordics absorb more long-haul demand. (travelandtourworld.com)
