Ads arrive in AI chatbots
Companies like OpenAI are beginning to insert advertisements and sponsored content into conversational AI interfaces. While OpenAI pledged not to let ads alter the integrity of its responses, the move is raising concerns among users about privacy and trust in AI-driven platforms.
- The move towards advertising is driven by the immense operational costs of running large language models, with OpenAI alone projecting an expenditure of around $115 billion over the next five years. Analysts predict that OpenAI's advertising business could generate over $25 billion in annual revenue by 2030. - AI search engine Perplexity began testing ads in November 2024 with formats like "Sponsored Follow-Up Questions" that appear in the related questions section. These ads are sold on a CPM (cost per thousand impressions) basis, with rates reportedly exceeding $50. - Microsoft started placing ads in its Copilot (formerly Bing Chat) in March 2023 and has also released a Chat Ads API to allow other publishers to monetize their own AI chat experiences. Similarly, Google is testing ads in its AI Overviews, which appear for about half of all Google searches. - Rival AI company Anthropic has publicly committed to keeping its chatbot, Claude, ad-free and even ran a Super Bowl ad mocking the integration of ads into competitor products. Google has also stated it has no plans to run ads directly in its Gemini chatbot, emphasizing the need to maintain user trust. - User data privacy is a central concern, as chatbot interactions can contain sensitive personal information. While OpenAI has stated it will not sell user data to advertisers, it will use chat history and interactions with ads for personalization if the feature is enabled. - The introduction of ads has been met with significant user backlash on platforms like Character.AI, with many users threatening to leave if the ads disrupt the immersive experience. This highlights the challenge AI companies face in balancing monetization with user trust and acceptance. - Early ad formats in AI chatbots include sponsored links, video ads, and contextual product recommendations. For example, a user researching rugs might be shown a coupon from a rug store that paid for the placement. - The timeline for ad integration is accelerating, with OpenAI officially starting to roll out ads to free and low-tier US users on February 9, 2026. This followed the hiring of key personnel with experience in search advertising from Google.
