OpenAI Delays ChatGPT 'Adult Mode' Again

OpenAI has once again delayed the launch of ChatGPT’s “adult mode,” which would offer less-restricted content to verified adult users. The company says it's shifting resources to higher-priority features like improving the core model's intelligence and reliability, amid ongoing scrutiny of AI-generated content.

The "adult mode" was first teased by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in October 2025, with an initial launch target for December of that year. This was subsequently pushed to the first quarter of 2026 before the current indefinite delay. The feature is intended to "treat adults like adults" by allowing more mature themes, including consensual sexual content and erotica, for users who pass age verification. OpenAI is redirecting its focus to enhancing core model capabilities, such as advanced reasoning and logic. Upcoming models like GPT-5.4 are expected to feature significantly larger context windows and an "extreme" reasoning mode for tackling complex questions, which are deemed higher priorities. This strategic shift aims to improve the fundamental performance and safety of the AI before expanding into more sensitive content areas. The delay also stems from the complexities of implementing a robust age verification system. OpenAI has started to roll out a system that uses behavioral signals to predict a user's age and has partnered with the third-party service Persona to handle ID and selfie verification for users who wish to access age-restricted features. Even with an "adult mode," some content will remain strictly off-limits. OpenAI has clarified that any material involving minors, non-consensual themes, illegal sexual acts, or exploitation will continue to be banned. The goal is to allow for more creative freedom for adults without creating a platform for harmful content. This cautious approach is set against a backdrop of significant legal and ethical scrutiny. In late 2025 and early 2026, OpenAI faced multiple lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT's psychologically manipulative design contributed to user harm, including suicides. These lawsuits claim the company prioritized engagement and market dominance over user safety. The development of "adult mode" is also a strategic move in a competitive AI landscape. While rivals have taken different approaches to content moderation, OpenAI is attempting to find a middle ground. This involves providing more flexibility than more conservative models while maintaining stronger safety protocols than more unfiltered alternatives.
