OpenAI's massive new $110 billion funding round has propelled the company's valuation to a staggering $840 billion. The round was double the size of its previous fundraising effort, placing the AI leader among the world's most valuable technology firms.
This record-breaking $110 billion funding round was led by a trio of tech giants: Amazon committed $50 billion, while Nvidia and SoftBank each invested $30 billion. The deal is one of the largest private funding rounds in history and more than doubles OpenAI's previous $40 billion fundraise in 2025. The investment isn't just about capital; it's deeply strategic. As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain access to 2 gigawatts of computing capacity using Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips. A separate partnership with Nvidia secures 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity, crucial for powering its AI models at a global scale. This influx of resources is meant to support staggering user growth. The company reports that ChatGPT now has over 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying consumer subscribers. Additionally, more than 9 million businesses are paying to use the AI, and its coding tool, Codex, has tripled its user base to 1.6 million weekly users this year alone. The new valuation elevates the stake held by the OpenAI Foundation, the original non-profit parent organization, to over $180 billion. This funding is intended to support the foundation's mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, including funding projects in health and AI safety. Led by CEO Sam Altman, who co-founded the company in 2015, OpenAI has transitioned from a non-profit research lab to a capped-profit juggernaut. The firm's long-standing partnership with Microsoft, its earliest major backer, remains central to its operations and is not impacted by the new investments.
