CNN Reportedly Acquired by 'MAGA Ally'
CNN has reportedly been acquired by a politically aligned "MAGA ally," a development that sparked immediate debate about the future of the free press. The potential acquisition raises concerns about significant changes to the network's editorial direction and journalistic standards. The report suggests a broader destabilization in the media sector, with potential ripple effects for other major news outlets.
The potential new ownership of CNN stems from a heated bidding war for its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, emerged as the frontrunner after its $111 billion offer was deemed "superior" by the Warner Bros. Discovery board, leading competitor Netflix to withdraw its bid. The "MAGA ally" connection is primarily through David Ellison's father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, a prominent Republican donor and friend of Donald Trump. Larry Ellison has hosted fundraisers for Trump and maintains a close relationship with him. This relationship has fueled speculation about the potential for political influence over CNN's editorial direction. Reports have surfaced that David Ellison gave assurances to the Trump administration that he would make "sweeping changes" to CNN if his acquisition bid was successful. Donald Trump himself has publicly stated that it is "imperative that CNN be sold." These developments have raised concerns among some CNN staffers about the network's future. Adding to the speculation is David Ellison's recent move to acquire the media company The Free Press and appoint its founder, conservative commentator Bari Weiss, as the editor-in-chief of CBS News, which is also owned by Paramount. This has led to conjecture that Weiss could have a significant role at a combined CBS News and CNN operation. However, David Ellison's own political history is not entirely aligned with the "MAGA" label. He has previously been a significant donor to the Democratic party, including a nearly $1 million donation to a political committee supporting Joe Biden in 2024. He has also publicly identified as "socially liberal." Should the deal receive regulatory approval, David Ellison would control a vast media empire that includes not only CNN and CBS but also Paramount Pictures, HBO, and the Warner Bros. film studio. In a public statement, Ellison has said his goal is to build a news service rooted in "trust" and "truth" that speaks to the "70% of Americans that are in the middle." The acquisition comes at a time of change for Warner Bros. Discovery, which had previously announced plans to spin off its cable networks, including CNN, into a separate company. CNN's current CEO, Mark Thompson, has urged staff not to "jump to conclusions" about the future, with company-wide town halls planned to discuss the impending changes.
