Kohler Unveils At-Home Health Monitoring Tech
Kohler Health has announced new features for its Dekoda system, designed to turn bathroom routines into health-monitoring opportunities. The system's expanded app capabilities aim to provide personalized health data and smarter tracking from home.
The Kohler Dekoda system utilizes a rim-mounted camera, optical sensors, and spectroscopy to analyze waste. This technology examines the color and light interaction with urine and stool to provide insights into hydration and gut health. Machine learning algorithms then process this data to identify patterns in stool consistency and frequency. In addition to hydration and digestive wellness, the Dekoda system is designed to detect the presence of blood in the stool, a feature that could provide early warnings for potential health issues. The device pairs with a mobile app, initially available for iOS with an Android version in development, to deliver these health insights directly to the user. Privacy concerns are addressed through several features. The camera is fixed to point only into the toilet bowl, and the collected data is protected with end-to-end encryption. For households with multiple users, a wall-mounted fingerprint scanner ensures that health data is linked to the correct individual, keeping personal information separate and private from guests. The upfront cost for the Dekoda device is $599, and a subscription is required for full functionality. A single-user membership costs $6.99 per month or $70 annually, while a family plan for up to five members is available for $12.99 per month or $130 per year. This move by Kohler places it in direct competition with startups like Throne, which offers a similar toilet-mounted camera system for $399 with a comparable subscription model. Both companies are part of a growing trend in at-home health monitoring, aiming to turn everyday routines into opportunities for passive health data collection. While some smart bidet and toilet lift devices may be eligible for purchase with Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) with a letter of medical necessity, it is not guaranteed that health monitoring devices like the Dekoda will qualify. The future of smart bathrooms is trending towards integrated health and wellness features, moving beyond simple hygiene to become a more integral part of preventative healthcare.
