Tech Layoffs Re‑sorting Talent

A chief technology officer just left Workday to become a “member of technical staff” at Anthropic, and that sounds like a demotion until you look at where the money and influence are moving in 2026. Peter Bailis made that switch in March, and Anthropic said he will work on reinforcement learning engineering instead of carrying a C-suite title. Companies are cutting broad software, support, and implementation roles while still paying up for people who can improve the models, the training systems, or the infrastructure that makes the models useful. If you can change the model, shape the product around the model, or turn customer problems into training and system improvements, you are sitting near the part of the company with the most leverage.
