Bellevue Cafe Launches Job Training Kickstarter

Bellden Cafe in Bellevue has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new workforce training program. The initiative aims to provide job skills in tea and dinner service to individuals seeking employment in the local food service industry.

The Kickstarter campaign is seeking $36,800 to cover the costs of professional equipment, the development of a training curriculum, and enhancements to the café space needed for the new program. This initiative builds on Bellden Cafe's eight-year history as a social enterprise, during which it has already created over 200 jobs and logged more than 2,000 hours of paid volunteer time. The program is designed to provide a structured hospitality training path for individuals with little to no prior industry experience. Owner Claire Sumadiwirya has a history of focusing on workforce development for marginalized communities, including refugees, survivors of human trafficking, single mothers, and people with disabilities. Training will focus on specialized skills such as professional tea service, dinner hospitality techniques, and table-side service. This expansion into evening service is a new chapter for the cafe, which has previously focused on a daytime coffee and cafe model. This isn't the cafe's first foray into community-focused fundraising; a previous grant from the Comcast RISE program was used to create a training system to empower immigrant minority women business owners. The cafe has a long-standing partnership with its supplier, Coava Coffee, to create career opportunities for those in need. The funds will be used exclusively for the workforce program and will not go toward charitable donations. Backers of the Kickstarter can receive rewards produced by trainees, such as handmade granola and in-house candles, and top-level donors will have their names included on a student-created mural in the cafe. The campaign is an "all or nothing" project, meaning it will only be funded if the $36,800 goal is reached by the deadline of Tuesday, March 24, 2026. This initiative will also introduce new community experiences at the cafe, including an afternoon tea service and signature dinner events featuring live music, all staffed by the program's trainees.
