Greece flights wobble

- Airline capacity to Greece for summer 2026 is up 9.2%, even as demand softens amid geopolitical and fuel concerns. (greekcitytimes.com) - Bookings are down more than 30% from the Netherlands and about 28% from the United States, and Aer Lingus is canceling numerous Dublin summer flights. ( ) - Qatar Airways plans to serve over 150 destinations from June 16, but analysts warn added seats may not align with weakening demand. (travelandtourworld.com)

Greece is heading into summer 2026 with more flights on sale but fewer travelers locking in trips. (greekcitytimes.com) INSETE’s Airdata Tracker shows scheduled international seats to Greece rising 9.2% year over year, to more than 30.8 million for the summer season. A separate April 7 report put the figure at 30.59 million seats, up 8.4%, showing airlines had kept adding capacity into early April. (greekcitytimes.com (money-tourism.gr)) The mismatch is showing up in bookings. Greek City Times, citing INSETE data through the end of March, said reservations across Greece’s six main source markets were down by as much as 34.7%, including declines of more than 30% from the Netherlands and about 28% from the United States. (greekcitytimes.com) That is a sharper turn than the picture at the end of February. Money Tourism, also citing INSETE, reported earlier drops of 13.7% from the United Kingdom, 13.5% from Germany, 9.5% from the United States, and 5.9% from France, while Italy and the Netherlands were still positive at that point. (money-tourism.gr) Airlines are still building networks around Greece and the wider eastern Mediterranean. Qatar Airways said on April 16 that it will serve more than 150 destinations from June 16, 2026, expanding the pool of connecting seats feeding Europe’s summer market. (qatarairways.com) At the same time, fuel costs and schedule risk are clouding the season. Travel And Tour World reported oil briefly topping $119 a barrel during recent Middle East tensions and said airlines were trimming schedules to avoid flying expensive half-empty planes. (travelandtourworld.com) Aer Lingus has not published a broad summer-cut announcement on its own site, and its official 2026 materials still show new routes and its biggest-ever transatlantic schedule. But Travel And Tour World has separately reported flight cancellations affecting Dublin and other European airports, underscoring how uneven airline operations remain this spring. (aerlingus.com (aerlingus.com) (travelandtourworld.com)) The backdrop is a market that was still growing not long ago. INSETE’s monthly bulletins showed international and domestic air arrivals to Greece rising through early 2025, and Greek airports handled a record 83.33 million passengers in 2025, up 4.9% from 2024. (transition-pathways.europa.eu (greekcitytimes.com)) For now, Greece’s summer schedule looks fuller than its booking curve. The next test is whether late-booking travelers fill those extra seats before airlines start cutting them back. (greekcitytimes.com (money-tourism.gr))
