Corvette ZR1X Hits 1,250 HP

Chevrolet introduced the ZR1X, an "electrified hypercar" Corvette boasting 1,250 street-legal horsepower. The car can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just two seconds, setting a new bar for American performance engineering with its blend of electrification and raw power.

The "ZR1" designation has a storied history, first appearing as a special engine package for the C3 Corvette from 1970 to 1972. Unlike the comfort-oriented models, these early ZR1s were built for racing, stripping away amenities like air conditioning and power steering to focus purely on performance. The moniker was famously revived for the 1990 C4 generation with an engine developed in partnership with Lotus, solidifying the ZR1's reputation as the "King of the Hill" and the pinnacle of Corvette engineering. The ZR1X's immense power comes from a hybrid system, mating a 1,064-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter LT7 V8 engine with a 186-horsepower electric motor that drives the front wheels. This combination not only creates a combined output of 1,250 hp but also gives the Corvette all-wheel-drive for the first time in its history, building on the foundation laid by the E-Ray model. The system does not require plug-in charging; instead, the 1.9 kWh battery is replenished through regenerative braking. This powertrain enables the ZR1X to achieve staggering acceleration, with a projected quarter-mile time of under nine seconds at a trap speed of over 150 mph. The electric motor on the front axle provides instant torque and remains engaged up to 160 mph, a higher threshold than in the E-Ray, contributing to its brutal off-the-line performance. The hand-built "Gemini" V8 engine itself is an evolution of the naturally aspirated engine found in the Corvette Z06 and Z06 GT3.R race car. Production of the 2026 Corvette ZR1X is set to begin in late 2025 at GM's Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky. The starting MSRP for the base 1LZ coupe is approximately $207,395, with convertible and higher trim levels exceeding that price. To mark its debut, Chevrolet is also releasing a limited "Quail Silver Limited Edition" convertible with exclusive features and a price tag of around $241,395.
