San Francisco Gets Thai Brunch Spot
The owners of Thai favorite Khao Tiew are opening "Tur," a new brunch and breakfast spot in San Francisco with inventive takes on classic Thai flavors. Expect dishes like duck breast panang curry and short rib tallow fried rice. The move into brunch signals the ongoing diversification of SF's dining scene, bringing Instagram-worthy Thai breakfast concepts to the city.
The new brunch spot, Tur, is a venture by Wipada Rattanapun and Arkaranit Dusitnitsakul, the successful owners of Khao Tiew. Their first restaurant in the West Portal neighborhood, Khao Tiew, opened in 2024 and was quickly praised as the city's "best new Thai restaurant" that year, known for dishes like beef tallow fried rice and fried papaya salad. Tur is setting up in a space with a long history of feeding the neighborhood; it will open at 1 West Portal Ave., the former location of the breakfast spot Squat and Gobble, which closed in January after 32 years of operation. The owners had searched across the Bay Area for a second location and coincidentally landed a spot just down the street from their existing, popular restaurant. The kitchen at Tur will be led by chef Varunthorn Ratanakachain, who previously worked at Darla Café, an Asian brunch spot in Saratoga. While the final menu is still under development, it is expected to feature brunch and breakfast dishes with influences from across Asia, including Thai-style congee and duck confit. The opening of Tur is part of a larger culinary trend in the Bay Area, which has seen a rise in brunch restaurants with Asian influences. Other recent additions to this growing scene include Rice and Shine, which took over the space of the historic Khan Toke Thai House, and The Peach in Oakland, from the owner of Jo's Modern Thai.
