Bruno Mars Hits No. 1
Bruno Mars' new album "The Romantic" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 186,000 equivalent units. This is his first chart-topping release since 2013 — Mars' ability to reinvent his sound has resonated with both fans and critics.
"The Romantic" marks Mars' first solo album in nearly a decade, following the multi-Grammy-winning "24K Magic" in 2016. In the interim, he formed the duo Silk Sonic with Anderson .Paak, releasing the chart-topping collaborative album "An Evening with Silk Sonic" in 2021. The new album moves away from the '90s R&B influence of "24K Magic," instead delving into 1970s soft soul, funk, and Latin-inspired sounds. The nine-track project is described as a collection of "finely crafted love songs" and has been called his most "straightforward throwback yet." The album's lead single, "I Just Might," made an explosive debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a first for Mars. The second single, "Risk It All," was accompanied by a music video co-directed by Mars and also topped streaming charts upon its release. Critical reception for "The Romantic" has been generally favorable, with many reviewers praising Mars' vocal performances and the album's polished production. However, some critics were divided on the lyricism, with outlets like *The Guardian* and *Pitchfork* finding it less original than his previous work and reliant on lyrical clichés. To support the album, Mars announced "The Romantic Tour," his first global headlining tour in nearly a decade. The all-stadium tour set a record for the highest first-day ticket sales for Live Nation's pre-sale, prompting the addition of over 30 new dates in North America and Europe due to overwhelming demand. Mars primarily co-wrote and produced the album with previous collaborator D'Mile, who also worked on the Silk Sonic project. Other returning creative partners include Philip Lawrence, Brody Brown, and James Fauntleroy.
