Big Indian gifts speed endowments

India’s top universities are compressing decades of endowment growth into years as major alumni gifts accelerate institutional fundraising and global positioning (indiatoday.in).

Three landmark alumni gifts in recent years — Nandan Nilekani’s ₹315 crore to IIT Bombay announced June 20, 2023; Dr Krishna Chivukula’s ₹228 crore to IIT Madras announced August 6, 2024; and Anant Yardi’s ₹150 crore pledge to IIT Delhi announced March 22, 2026 — have concentrated amounts that previously would have taken decades to accumulate. (indianexpress.com) IIT Madras reported alumni contributions of ₹368.19 crore in FY 2023–24 and total fundraising of ₹513 crore that year, while also recording new pledges of ₹717 crore during the same period. (thehindu.com) IIM Ahmedabad institutionalised large-scale alumni giving in 2020 with an initial endowment commitment of ₹100 crore from founding alumni, and its endowment arm announced the Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence on January 29, 2026 as a funded strategic initiative. (iima.ac.in) IIT Bombay received an anonymous ₹160 crore alumnus gift in August 2023 to establish a Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub, demonstrating that both named and anonymous mega-gifts are now reshaping campus priorities. (livemint.com) IIT Madras reported 48 donors giving over ₹1 crore — 16 alumni and 32 corporate partners — underscoring donor concentration at the top end, while its global fundraising messaging includes a $100 million endowment target to accelerate research and rankings ambitions. (pib.gov.in) Donor directions mirror institutional priorities: Nilekani’s ₹315 crore was framed for infrastructure and deep‑tech research and startup ecosystems, while Chivukula’s ₹228 crore has been allocated to scholarships, research excellence grants and student fellowships, shifting multi‑decade resource plans into immediate capital and program launches.
