New Partnership to Deliver Stem Cell Therapy for Animals

Animal health biotech company Gallant has announced a partnership with MWI Animal Health to distribute an anticipated FDA-conditionally approved, off-the-shelf stem cell therapy to veterinary clinics. The agreement establishes the first ultra-low temperature cold chain in veterinary medicine, preparing for the therapy's potential market entry.

Gallant's first therapy, sonruvetcel, targets refractory feline chronic gingivostomatitis (rFCGS), a severe oral disease for which there are currently no approved treatments. This painful condition affects up to 10% of cats, often leading to euthanasia when other treatments fail. The treatment uses allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells, meaning they are sourced from healthy, FDA-qualified donor cats rather than the patient animal. This "off-the-shelf" approach allows for immediate use by veterinarians without the need to harvest cells from the sick pet. Gallant derives its cells from uterine tissues. The therapy is on track for FDA conditional approval, which is an expedited pathway for drugs addressing unmet medical needs. This allows drugs to be marketed for up to five years based on a "reasonable expectation of effectiveness" while the company gathers the final data required for full approval. The safety and manufacturing requirements are the same as for full approval. Beyond the initial feline therapy, Gallant is developing a pipeline of regenerative treatments for other common ailments in pets. Future therapies will target conditions with limited effective options, including osteoarthritis, atopic dermatitis, and chronic kidney disease in both dogs and cats. The partnership establishes a new standard for veterinary logistics, requiring an ultra-low temperature cold chain. The stem cell therapy must be stored at -80°C (-112°F) to maintain its viability, a temperature range that halts nearly all chemical and biological activity. MWI Animal Health, a part of Cencora, is one of the largest animal health distributors in the United States and the United Kingdom. Its extensive network includes 19 distribution centers and seven pharmacies across the U.S., enabling next-day delivery service for most of its products.
