Mobile Industry Launches 'Open Telco AI'
The GSMA, a leading mobile industry body, has launched a global initiative called “Open Telco AI.” Backed by major carriers, the project aims to standardize and democratize AI tools to enhance network efficiency, security, and customer experience across the telecommunications sector.
The Open Telco AI initiative was launched to address the significant performance gap of general-purpose AI models in the telecommunications sector. Currently, only 16% of generative AI deployments in the telecom industry are applied to network operations, as these generic models often struggle with the complexity of network data and documentation. AT&T and AMD are key founding partners in this initiative. AT&T is contributing a family of open, hardware- and cloud-agnostic telco-specific AI models, while AMD is providing the necessary computing power for training and fine-tuning these models through its GPU platforms and its cloud partner, TensorWave. The initiative will feature a "Telco Capability Index" to measure the performance of AI models on a range of tasks specific to the telecommunications industry. This will help in creating a standardized benchmark for telco-grade AI. A new portal has also been launched to provide access to open models, data, and tools to foster collaboration among operators, vendors, and developers. This project is part of a broader trend of AI adoption in the telecom industry, which is increasingly being used for predictive network maintenance, fraud detection, and customer churn analytics. While a majority of AI deployments have focused on cost-saving measures, there is a growing shift towards using AI for revenue generation. The Open Telco AI initiative complements other industry collaborations like the CAMARA project, an open-source initiative within the Linux Foundation focused on creating a standardized API ecosystem for telecom networks. Both initiatives aim to reduce complexity and foster innovation by creating a more unified and accessible environment for developers. A wide range of industry players have lent their support to the Open Telco AI initiative, including major operators like China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, and Vodafone, as well as tech giants like Google Cloud and IBM. Numerous academic institutions are also contributing to the effort, highlighting the collaborative nature of the project.
