Germany Sets Date for Next Presidential Election
Germany's Federal Assembly will convene on January 30, 2027, to elect the country's next head of state. The election will determine the successor to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whose term officially ends on March 18, 2027. The assembly, composed of members of the Bundestag and state delegates, is responsible for the election.
While the German Chancellery holds executive power, the President's role is primarily ceremonial and representative, acting as the head of state. The President represents Germany on the world stage, concludes treaties with foreign nations, and formally accredits diplomats. Domestically, their signature is required for all federal laws to take effect, and they possess the power to veto legislation they believe violates the constitution. The Federal Assembly, or *Bundesversammlung*, is the largest parliamentary body in Germany, convened for the sole purpose of this election. It is comprised of all members of the Bundestag and an equal number of delegates elected by the 16 state parliaments, ensuring a balance of federal and regional representation. These state delegates are not always politicians; they can also be prominent citizens from arts, sports, or other areas of public life. The election is conducted by secret ballot and can go to three rounds. A candidate needs an absolute majority in the first two rounds to win. If no candidate succeeds, a third round is held where a simple plurality—the most votes—is sufficient to secure the presidency. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been in office since 2017. Before his presidency, he served twice as Foreign Minister and once as Vice-Chancellor under Angela Merkel. He was re-elected for his second and final five-year term on February 13, 2022, with 78% of the vote. A president can be elected for a maximum of two consecutive five-year terms. Any German citizen who is at least 40 years old and eligible to vote in Bundestag elections can be nominated by any member of the Federal Convention. Although no official candidates have been announced, speculation for the 2027 election has surfaced. Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has reportedly considered nominating current European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which could make her Germany's first female president.
